We took the caravan up to the DOC Campground at the Waikari River Mouth and Beach Reserve for a couple of nights. The site is quite small but in mid-week in winter we were along as usual. On the way to the site, which is 13 km off of SH2 North of Napier, we enjoyed a leisurely crawl behind 4,000 sheep who were being moved back to their block after having been crutched.
As you can see we parked up overlooking the slow moving river and as the weather was warm and calm we spent the first afternoon reading, eating and drinking. The beach is a 2km along a track with great views of the river below and it’s Toi Toi covered banks. The beach itself is mainly sandy with loads of washed up timber. Apparently the current timber line is quite recent and the beach can be pure sand for several kms. We’ll be back in the spring/summer as the swimming looks great and safe.
